Totally depends on what video graphics devices those "old Dells" have in
them.
Pretty much all "old" video cards have some kind of quirk that requires
tweaking.
Running Xorg using the vesa driver instead of a device-specific driver will
often have video that shows up garbled.
Monitors that don't implement a complete set of EDID data can end up
confusing the drivers about supported display sizes.
Attempting to load the nvidia/fglrx proprietary drivers while the open
source nouveau/radeon drivers are still installed or vice versa.

Any of these things and plenty of others can lead to graphics not working
properly for a default installer.
