OK - Thanks for the responses.

Let's see if I can cover them all.

The iTunes idea I considered except I'll still need a machine with a perm. IP
address.

I do have browseable = Yes in my config.

While the network is a combination of Linux and Windows clients, it's not in a
work environment with domain controllers and such.

I guess I should mention I'm now running Samba 3.0 which I have never tried
before now.

Here's some more info I found:
==============================
On Samba.org's own website they document how to set up a guest accessible
server by using passdb backend = guest.

There is no mention of a guest backend anywhere in the passdb backend
documentation and when I try it, samba crashes and the log says there is no
guest backend.

Talk about "Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmm".

I'm sure it would be easier to just assign my "server" a static IP and have
apache serve up the directories but I would really like to figure out why
samba isn't working they way I would like it to.

Thanks for the feedback and if I do find the problem, I'll be sure to post it.
