Did the workaround suggested in that bug report help?

I think so (especially if you learned something new from trying the
workaround).  If you use "reportbug debian-installer", it gives you
the option of adding information to an existing bug.

See the files in the /var/log/debian-installer directory.  There's an
auto-generated hardware report, for example.
