I am using the same version.  Are you sure you are reading the man page 
correctly?  There is clearly a -W option for smbclient to specify the 
workgroup, and I haven't had any problems specifying a workgroup in the 
mount statement.  I'm required to use the workgroup=domain when 
mounting shares, if I do not, I get 'Access Denied' errors, we don't 
let anonymous mounts.
