Ideas:

[0] Permissions on the device / group membership of user trying to use 
audio. What does ls -l /dev/mixer show?
[1] Device doesn't even exist, thus you need to download the ALSA 
drivers and give them a shot.

Check your modules (/sbin/lsmod), are the sound modules loaded? If not, 
you definitively go for [1].
