If you have at lest or more then 20Mbs (you might be able to go smaller, but
this is the smallest I have gone, there are some micro distros out there
that should be able to go smaller, but ask others on the group since I have
no experience with them) you can put a minimal install of Linux in that
would have ssh and about nothing more, then you could just ssh into the big
desktop.

I would like to use an old laptop as a dumb terminal.  The laptops I have
are too old or have too small of a hard drive to run Linux.  My big noisy
desktop sits in the basement.  I want a wired connection that would give me
a command line interface from a laptop to the desktop PC.

I have seen this done with Linux embedded on PC/104 CPUs.
