HOWDY Henry... First off, if you wish to transmit any data on a ham
band you MUST get your license! There are many clubs and organizations
in the area of Pgh that can help you. It's not hard.

Now for that spare computer. It will do just fine depending on WHAT
you want to do with it. If you wish to just recieve data on the
HighFrequency (HF) bands or VeryHF bands, it will do nicely! Nothing
more than a real SoundBlaster sound card can do it for you!!! Most of
the activity is in the VHF and UHF bands. Hams are using some pretty
high data rates, especially in the UHF bands, so the sound card trick
doesn't work. You can LISTEN in on the 2meter (144-148MHZ) band
between 144-145MHz and find packet radio happening. Nothing more than
modems chewing on some data that sounds like a real bad burping radio
problem!!! hehehe The data being transfered could be just about
anything from an email to a program. This is not the fast means of
getting data around, but it works unattended. The emails can be
anything from HI THERE to a message from a military man/woman over
seas.

That section of the Linux installs have the software needed to decode
the AX.25 protocol. (Change the burps, farts and whistles into
readable data) You can find other prg's on the net to have a BBS if
you wish. Transmissions you can decode could be from satellites
sending weather or info about its internals or even relaying land
based data. If it can be done on the internet then it is done over ham
radio frequencies.

You will find out that most of the ways things are done on the
internet could have orginally been done or formed in the ham bands.
Alot of the space missions starting back in the 60's would have a ham
radio operator onboard. It is good to have a real communications
person aboard. I have personally talk to several of the shuttle
missions' radio operators. Quite a few of the 'birds in the sky' were
orginally sent by ham radio groups. If you want to do some research,
go to http://www.arrl.org ... This is the Amateur Radio Relay League
web page. It can wow you or put you to sleep with the amount of
information you can learn there and also find links to many other good
sites dealing with ham radio.

The last and final thing to mention about ham radio, its FUN!
Frank

PS - If you wish to contact me off the list, PLEASE, feel free to do
so!
