When I got a USB webcam, I started using the 2.4.0 kernel. They're up to
test12 now; test8 and test10 are the ones that I'm sure have worked for me;
test11 may also be good but I'm not sure if my problems on it are because of
the kernel or something else. Haven't tried test12. 

Note that on test9 it wouldn't boot, and on test8 xawtv (the program I was
using) would go into an unkillable sleep. That appears to have been fixed in
test10. 

Of course, YMMV.
