Do you use Earthlink?  My understanding is that they do not let data
addressed to the smtp port (25?) to leave their network, unless it comes
from their mail server.

I've never had a problem with it at all. The only thing is that the mail
carrier has to relay for you. If you really need a mail relay, let me know
your ip and I will add you to my sendmail allow.
