verizion and stuff:
it took a while for me to get it set up, but it works really well.
the time to get it set up was partially my fault. i signed up on
around oct 20th, and they said i should be able to connect around oct
26th. since their install software only works in windows (and presumably
mac) i had to arrange a temporary windows machine (my advisors laptop).
to make a long story short. the connection wasnt active on 10-26 like they
said. because of school and computer logistics i wasnt able to determine
this until around 11-15. i called tech support and they said it would be
taken care of by 11-26. it was and the install went fine on the windows
side.
i used rp-pppoe from roaringpenguin.com to get it working in linux-as
suggested by someone on the list. this wasnt an issue after i realized i
forgot to do make modules_install to put the module for my nic in the
right place. i download a client from dyndns.org to get a xxx.homeip.net
domain, and all is well.
download speeds are about what i expected. i haven't had the chance to
estimate the upload speeds.
if you decide to go with verizion consider the following:
o i read alot of bad stuff about them after i had already
ordered the service. keep in mind that with a company this
large there are bound to be people who are dissatified, and
people tend speak louder when they are unhappy.
o the tech support people are generally nice to you as long
as you are nice to them :)
o it really sucks that you have to have a windows computer to
set stuff up. i would have had everything working quicker if
i didnt have to borrow a windows box to get things going.
o email me if you have any trouble and i'll do what i can.
