[wplug] Open-source cloud storage solutions

IMO, nobody should use Dropbox, Google Drive, or any other cloud storage
service that doesn't offer client-side encryption. Putting a file on Dropbox
is like inviting Dropbox employees, the NSA, and anybody else who can
wield a court order to look at what you're storing. It's none of their
business.

Mega[1] offers 50GB of free storage with client-side encryption. It doesn't
have a Linux sync client just yet, but it does have a pretty snappy Web
interface and Android app. Is it as secure as something you operate
yourself? Probably not, but I do think it's better than conventional
providers, so it's my standard recommendation for someone who wants a
service that "just works."

I mean, when you sign up for an account, you play a game where you
destroy the letters "NSA" in order to generate entropy. That counts for
something, right?

ownCloud is okay if you're aware of its limitations. It can be finicky, difficult
to configure, and its development, if you can call it that, moves at a glacial
pace. Most of its features are half-complete or half-assed. Despite all
those shortcomings, I still haven't found anything better for open source
file sync, contacts, and calendar services, so I continue to make due with
it.
