NoMachine/NX may also be worth investigating.  There is a zero-
cost client* (not open source) for Windows, Mac, and Linux
<http://www.nomachine.com/> and a fully open source server* for
Linux <http://freenx.berlios.de/>.  NoMachine also sells a server
with extra features.

*Unlike typical X nomenclature, in this case the client runs on
the machine you're sitting in front of and the server runs on the
remote machine.
