Verizon expanding fiber-optic network in region

Thursday, February 08, 2007
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Verizon Communications Inc. said today that it will roll out its
high-speed fiber-optic network to additional communities in and around
Pittsburgh.

The network, known as "FIOS," is capable of carrying broadband, voice
and eventually, television. The new communities outside of Pittsburgh
are Aspinwall, Baldwin Borough, Brentwood, Chalfant, East McKeesport,
East Pittsburgh, Etna, Fox Chapel, Harmar, Monroeville, North
Huntingdon, North Versailles, O'Hara, Penn Township, Pitcairn,
Sharpsburg, Trafford, Turtle Creek, Wall, Whitehall, Wilkins and
Wilmerding. In the city, Carrick and Overbrook also will receive FIOS.

Verizon said by the end of 2007 it expects about 275,000 homes and small
businesses in Southwestern Pennsylvania to access its all-fiber-optic
network.

Of course, it's predictable that they'll take their own sweet time in
getting to the city itself, which arguably provides a better overall
social utility, but lower revenue per household.

Also, didn't verizon promise this stuff back to Pennsylvania as far back
as 1998? Wasn't this the reason they supported S30 a few years ago
which blocked municipal wifi?

Oh well, for those of you in the suburbs, more of you will be able to
choose between the pleasures of not using verizon and blazing lightning
ultra-fast interweb. Of course, this comes from the guy who uses
Comcast and actually likes their service...
