You can get an Indy to bootp/tftpboot netBSD, I did this about 3 years
ago.  I don't think you'll have any X or anything like that.  you *can*
use the it's monitor & keyboard, you don't need a serial term, but all
that will appear is a text mode 80x24 rectangle in the middle of the
teal and purple boot background.

Of course, as I mentioned, i did this all 3 years ago and am pretty
forgetful, too.

I think the netbsd/sgi docs actually talk about installing via tftp/nfs
on an indy as the default method.
