Debian 3.0 is the same stable version that has been around for a while now.  
It appears they made a new bugfix release, but it's still the same collection 
of somewhat old packages that has been around for a while, just with a few 
less bugs.

If you haven't given up on this xmms issue completely yet, get back to us with 
answers to some of the questions I asked, and we can probably make some 
progress on this problem.

As for your apt problem, that's a separate question that I don't know as much 
about, but to work around it, you could use the "--print-uris" option to 
apt-get to get a list of files apt wants to install, and then download the 
ones you want individually, and then use "dpkg" to install them.
