[wplug] Lost my X

System is Debian Sarge and Gnome 2.6.
Somehow -- I really don't have any idea what it could have been -- my
laptop X server stopped permitting me to launch applications. I don't
really know how to debug this because I can't open a web browser to search
for help. X is still running, and Gnome, and the gnome-panel and so on.
But I cannot start any new applications that depend on X.
The only comments I get in /var/log/XFree86.0.log look like:
AUDIT: Wed Feb 16 18:57:02 2005: 4253 X: client 8 rejected from local host
If I try to run an application from the command line, I get:
$ firefox
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
(firefox-bin:4559): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
$
Running 'xhost +' gives the same error:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
xhost: unable to open display ":0.0"
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace spits me back to gdm. If I login again, the problem
persists.
All I did to my system today had to do with network configuration: I
updated dhcp, ran dhcpd and IP masquerade. Then I shut all that down and
removed IP masquerade. My iptables listing is now empty.
Running 'find /etc -mmin -360' produces nothing of interest (the problem
started less than 6 hours ago).
~/.xsession-errors looks like:
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/X11/sessreg -a -w
/var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/lib/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -l ":0"
"root"
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
SESSION_MANAGER=local/deepblue:/tmp/.ICE-unix/2834

I rmmod'ed all the iptabls stuff, to no avail.
I'm pretty much totally confused.
Any ideas at all?
