Figured it out.  On my system the relevant directory is 
/usr/share/xsessions.  Thanks for your tip: Enlightenment will now enter 
the grueling qualification process to determine its fitness as a WM.

The 'official' answer on the gnome lists for changing window managers 
*seems* to be "killall currentwm && newwm &" as they got rid of the GUI 
tool for changing WMs that was available in Gnome 1.4.
