You need to be running a kernel with SMP support.  You can probably just 
install the appropriate kernel package for SMP systems, it might even 
already have been installed.

you'll want to run 'up2date kernel-smp' I believe, to force up2date to 
get the kernel-smp package if it isn't already installed.  You might 
need to specify the particular kernel name, for example, "up2date 
kernel-smp-2.4.20-8.athlon'.

Otherwise, find your favorite redhat mirror and download the latest 
kernel-smp package and install it manually.

Another solution is to build your own kernel, make sure that smp is enabled.
