The 2GB limit is actually a file size limit inherent in old linux
kernels. If you use a reasonably new kernel and not any sort of weird
filesystem, there is no longer a 2GB filesize limit.
So yeah, piping the images through gzip or bzip2 or whatever should be
fine.
