The filesystem can ls the file or directory.  But to access it you have to put double quotes around the filename because of the
embedded space.  As in your second example.

If you tried to backup the my documents directory.  The backup software may not actually find the directory because the double
quotes are required to access it.  Even though the software can tell that it exists.

I'll do some testing on a local Linux box to see how the filesystem reacts to backing up the yesterday or bdoggin directories.
