I routinely check my download bandwidth by downloading large files (say,
self-extracting executables for windows) from major distribution sites,
and I check my upload bandwidth by scp'ing files from my routerserver to
my laptop over a known-high-bandwidth connection (say, from here at CMU).

Is trhis for you, or one of your customers? It's not so clear from your
post.
