[wplug] checking a network connection

Having just installed a new DSL connection, I would like to verify that its bandwidth is at least somewhere near what was advertised (in each direction).

I don't need to be very rigourous about this and it's not worth a lot of effort to me so I'm not about to learn a network monitoring package. I'm not going to analyse it, just glance over it somewhat.

But I would like to be able to say to the customer, in handwaving sort of way, that they're getting what they paid for. Any ideas on a simple way to do this?
