Shame you don't have another hard disk you can throw in there to try it
out, have you searched for your IBM hard disk model number online and/or
motherboard to see if anyone has had a similar problem?

And this must be why off-topic posting is a bad idea :(

To sum up: I turned on my computer this morning for the 10th consecutive

time without the HDD plugged in, first thing this morning.  It again 
POSTed fine.  Since I was having bootup problems, on average, two out of

five boot attempts, I have concluded that my HDD (an IBM Deskstar, 
apparently they're notorious) is foul.  I am going to buy a new drive 
(Seagate?).  And I am going to get a second, also.

Other people have been talking about power supplies.  If I still can't
get 
no satisfaction, I will probably up my pwrsply.
