[wplug] how do i connect to irc channel of wplug

I have xchat here, and I'm trying to connect to wplug's irc channel as
per the mentionings on http://www.wplug/pages/irc. How do I do this? Do
I make up a username, do I register? where would i register? how do i
register? then what?

After simply openingxchat, I've run the following in its command line:
/server irc.freenode.net

and then I get this:

 Perl interface loaded

and it just goes on and on.
