[wplug] scp, ssh, ftp login only root

No, I cannot log in remotely using *any* of these services. The problem
is always the same.

Gentoo 1.4 is the distro.
I'm using Pure FTP for ftp.

I've seen some things about PAM on the Gentoo forums, but nothing that's
exactly the same as my problem.
