Here's the whole procedure I followed:

-cd into /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8
-make mrproper
-make clean (this is probably redundant)
-make xconfig:
---load the 686 config file
---set acpi "y", apm "n"
---set ext3 "y"
---save and exit
-make dep
-make
-make modules
-make modules install
--- get error, create directory called /lib/modules/2.4.20-8custom
-make modules install (again, no error this time)
-make install
-edit grub.conf entry for 2.4.20-8custom "root=/dev/hda2"
-reboot.

The kernel boots now, but none of my modules load at boot time, and the 
module for my ethernet connection (3c59x) won't load manually. Haven't 
tried others just yet.
