Are you running an accellerated X driver or a generic driver?  I have no 
problems with X being slow on any of my Linux boxes.

As for rpm, what version are you using?  I think this hang issue was fixed 
in 4.2.  I experienced it a few times with RH8 but I haven't since I 
upgraded to RH9 and applied all the latest updates.
