Well, there are two separate issues here. One is making the USB 
interface work and seeing there is a device there, and the other is 
actually mounting the thing.

I had troubles (as you did) with mounting. But it seems that this error 
message has something to do with leftover usb modules looking for 
something to read, when the camera is not there. Problem _seems_ solved 
for me if I manually remove any unused modules, like usb-storage, after 
I'm done with the camera.
