I'm running Gentoo on an iBook2 (the pearly-colored one), if that helps.
I'm going to be too busy to help much with that until after April 15th
(and not just because of taxes!). It took a while before all the
hardware that comes on it was supported, but it's pretty much there now,
and your older-sounding machine shouldn't have any problems, though I'm
not sure about the modem.

Haven't seen fit to get any firewire peripherals, so I haven't tried it.

I haven't been altogether satisfied with Evolution on Gentoo, at least
when I'm trying to run a Gnome2 desktop, and the only version of
Evolution that the Gentoo folks consider stable is based on Gnome 1.x
with the gtk+ 1.x widget set. Can't do "Get messages" (I use IMAP,
YMMV), and can't just click on links in text email -- evolution doesn't
invoke the web browser properly.

Not Mozilla? Don't know if you'll find the commercial netscape for
Linux on a non-Intel architecture (Although I'd put the chances as
better than for any other commercial software), but I haven't checked.
Mozilla is fine, though, but the only Flash player is gplflash which
usually crashes my mozilla 1.3.
