Sleep and hibernate are slightly different.
Sleep is a low power mode and I think can be done with just a properly
configured apm setup.
I use hibernate on my laptop and the BIOS copies RAM to a special
partition and completely powers off.
There are dos utilities to setup that partition, and this linux util which
