If your KDE session starts to malfunction, you could just kill it by
hitting Alt-Ctrl-Backspace. That'll kill the X server along with the KDE
session; no need to reset your machine.

You should try to enable the SysRq key combos. By hitting Alt-SysRq + S,
you sync your disks; Alt-SysRq + U, remount everything read-only;
Alt-SysRq + B, reset the computer.

To see if it is enabled, type:

cat /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq

If the output is "1", it's enabled. If it is "0", you enable it by:

echo "1" > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq

So, in case of a problem, hit Alt-SysRq + S + S  + U + U + B.

See /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sysrq.txt.

Now for the cause of your feeze, I'd suggest you update your KDE
packages. Mandrake 7 sounds more than a year old and you may be running
an unstable version of KDE.
