Hmmm.  Well, that seems to eliminates the fresh
install approach since the hardware profile of the
VMWare machine will be totally different.  Looks like
you may have had the correct approach to begin with: 
point the VMWare machine to the existing partition and
see if that works.  Hopefully having the underlying
hardware change under the copy of XP won't break it.

Based on the above, though, it won't accept the VMWare
hardware anyway.

My machine is a 650 MHz P-III with 640Mb RAM.  I have
no complaints about Linux performance or VMWare
performance for Windows 2000 Workstation.  However, I
also have a VM running Windows 98 and the emulation
there for some reason is very choppy.  The Windows
2000 emulation is very smooth.
