The first thing this reminds me of if a time at an Installfest where we 
spent a few hours trying to track down a problem where the output just 
stopped like this. It turned out the output was being redirected to the 
serial port. I think the options you want to check would be in 
/etc/inittab and /boot/grub/grub.conf (or /etc/lilo.conf?)
