Check out the iptables scripts at
http://www.sentry.net/~obsid/Linux/IPTables/rc.scripts.dir/current/ They're
pretty well thought out... They do things like rate limiting for DOS attacks
etc.

if you are using redhat you could try selecting the "high security" firewall
option during the installation. version 7.2 will allow you to select which
services to turn on.
