it lets you choose which System databases of information to use for
hosts, users, groups, etc.
e.g. you can say "for usernames, use NIS, then /etc/passwd", and
"for hosts, use dns, then NIS, then /etc/hosts"
I've seen this on HP-UX and Solaris, and looking at my SuSE box,
it has it as well.
