My opinion is that it depends on your goal.  Ask people to reply to the 
list if you intend to start a larger conversation, ask for replies to 
yourself if you're just collecting information and are going to report 
back after collecting it.

Remember, when using the wplug-members mailing list - only dues-paying 
members are subscribed to this list, so you're only getting to 16 
people.  And I personally wouldn't try to conduct an extended training 
discussion on the general mailing list.  What I would do, personally, 
would be to post the question you did to the general list, and ask 
people to send replies to you.  If there is enough interest, it might be 
possible to set up a separate mailing list for extended discussions on 
the topic.
