== My .bash_profile ==
This is my primary file. It uses some host detection to figure out what files it should load for the colors of the prompt and then sets up most of my environment variables. It's starting to show it's age from when I switched to bash back in 1997. Ooohhh, compiler optimizations for 32 bit sparc platforms! There are some nifty features in this that others may like. First, it's got a wicked cool prompt, well, I thought so back in 1998 when I made it. Second, I can modify and add directories to the permanent path from the command line by using the addpath command.

Most commercially available digital video recorders (DVRs) allow you to record programs from a guide, pause live television, and free you from the shackles of prime time scheduling. But really, shouldn't they be doing more? How about cutting commercials? Streaming media to other televisions? Accessing your photos, videos, and music? Expand your storage beyond a paltry 250GB?

In this talk I'll go over the ins and outs of MythTV, an expandable Linux based suite of programs that provide DVR functionality and more. I'll cover the basics of what you need to get going, the architecture of MythTV, how to get standard and hi-definition, where listings come from, and lots more. If you've been thinking about making the leap to a MythTV box, or are just curious, be sure to show up to this talk.

I would like to see WPLUG continue to reach out to members of the
Pittsburgh area Linux community. I am pleased with the board's one,
three, and five year goals.

I run into people frequently that use and love Linux. They don't
necessarily want to join WPLUG, but I want them to know it exists. I
would also like to see more about companies and organizations in the
area that use Linux.

Members need to contribute to WPLUG for it to reach its potential.
I've been a member of WPLUG for about 2 years. I am the moderator of
the wplug-plan list, and I am working on the Internet committee to

Dave Kraus here, candidate for WPLUG board. I have been a casual Linux user since 2000 though I still consider myself a newbie. My involvement within WPLUG began in 2005 mostly lurking on the mailing lists. In 2006 I opted to become a proper member and participate in meetings and other events. I have learned a great deal and had fun along the way.

My goal as a WPLUG board member is to help the organization grow and prosper. Easier said than done, I agree. However, some efforts I intend to champion to accomplish the goal include: seeking new membership and speaking interest outside the areas of IT and CompSci, building relationships with other local technology groups, and collaborating on "low-tech" social events.

On the business side of things, I plan to help improve WPLUG communications and logistics; seeking new venues and hosts for meetings and events.

I am looking forward to contributing to WPLUG and making it an even better resource for our community.

My position is much the same this year as it [http://www.nyx.net/~vkochend/wplug-election-2006.html was last year]: I believe the two most important areas for WPLUG to work on are connecting with outsiders and strengthening the way WPLUG runs.

We have had some successes with outreach in the past year, notably participating in the Pittsburgh Technology Council's Summer Slam, inviting the Pittsburgh Coding Dojo to meet during installfests, and distributing software and leaflets for [[SoftwareFreedomDay|Software Freedom Day]]. I intend to pursue these and other relationships with organizations and the public to better increase WPLUG's visibility in the Pittsburgh area.

While we have had some great volunteers step up in the past year, I'd still like to see broader involvement. I hope that if you vote for me (or even if you don't!), you also plan to volunteer to help WPLUG run. Whether you plan events and speakers with the Program Committee, handle our online presence on the [[Internet_Committee|Internet Committee]], or help us connect with others on the [[PRCommittee|Public Relations Committee]], '''you''' are the key to making WPLUG better. At the October 30, 2006 meeting the WPLUG board established a set of five, three and one year goals. We then pared each of these sets of goals to about five different concrete and actionable items. The goal of this plan is that the one year tasks always lead us in the direction of the three year tasks, which are the foundation for the five year tasks. The one year plan should be revisited as needed during the year, with the three and five year plan revisited annually.

At the October 30, 2006 meeting the WPLUG board established a set of five, three and one year goals. We then pared each of these sets of goals to about five different concrete and actionable items. The goal of this plan is that the one year tasks always lead us in the direction of the three year tasks, which are the foundation for the five year tasks. The one year plan should be revisited as needed during the year, with the three and five year plan revisited annually.

This special election is to fill the position of Treasurer on the WPLUG board. This new officer will serve on the WPLUG board until October 2007, the end of the current term. This is the only position we are electing for at this meeting.

There are two candidates running for the position, [[User:Michael.Hansell | Michael Hansell]] and [[User:curlynoodle | David Kraus]]. The board sent a brief questionnaire to the candidates, and their statements appear at the bottom of this page.

What qualities do you think make you qualified for Treasurer?

- I strive to build and maintain professional yet collegial
relationships with my fellow WPLUG members and others in the
organization.
- I pride myself as being a trustworthy person who can also add,
subtract, multiply and divide.

What is one new idea that you'd like to implement as a member of the
WPLUG board?

Organize an introductory presentation/workshop for local middle and
high school students to help bolster interest in compsci, programming,
OSS, and Linux. (May not be a 'new' idea, but I think its a good
one.)

What are some things you can help WPLUG do better as a member of
the WPLUG board?

- Actively seek new presenters for meetings and special events.
- Promote the organization (and Linux) in new areas of industry. i.e.
automation and controls.
- Help with site content updates and communications.

If elected, I pledge to execute the role of WPLUG Treasurer to the
best of my ability and always in the best interest of the

== Michael Hansell ==
My name is Michael Hansell, I've been with WPLUG since BethLynn
introduced me back in 2004. I have recently graduated (April 2007) from
the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in ADMJ Computer Forensics.
During the last semester I worked under BethLynn at TimeSys Corporation
as a Systems Administrator. Before that I worked with X-Cel Quality
Services as a Manager of Information Systems for about 7 years.

While with WPLUG I have been on numerous committees, including currently
the Investigating Committee, and the Public Relations committee.

While at the University of Pittsburgh I was the President of the Impax
Advance Weapons Club, Vice President for Panther Grappling club,
Business Manager for 3 clubs; the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club, Abro's
Capoeira club, and the Panther Grappling club.

I also earned my Eagle Scout badge from troop 195 in 1998.

I’m currently looking for a job, and am looking at going for my Masters
of Business Administration, Masters of Information Systems, and/or
Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) Security Assured
Information Systems (SAIS). There is also talk of me doing a seminar for
the American Society for Quality speaking about ISO certifications and
Linux.

While with the martial art clubs at Pitt I had the reputation for being
the go to guy for interclub communication and was responsible for alot
of get togethers. In this grain I would like to see WPLUG have more
connection with some of the other communities of the PA, Ohio, and WV areas.

Linux is an incredibly powerful tool -- but that power comes at a cost.

It's frequently easy to make mistakes when deploying a Linux system
that cause system crashes, poor performance, or leave the door wide open
for those people who are less than scrupulous. What's worse, is that
while many of the mistakes are easily made by beginning Linux
administrators, they are frequently seen by advanced administrators too!

Beth Lynn Eicher will discuss some of these mistakes that are
frequently made and how you can make sure that you don't suffer the same
fate.

Pwagstro: added in some new features, removed reference to the GIMP for Windows, because it's already mentioned on the windows side. In the future, we should have an open source for windows page.

There are lots of tasks that may seem relatively simple in Windows, but may be a bit more difficult to do in Linux. This page presents a variety of these tasks, and the best ways to solve them using tools in Linux. There are lots of tasks that may seem relatively simple in Windows, but may be a bit more difficult to do in Linux.
