Gregsim: /* Room Share interest */

This is a great place for Western PA-ers to meet other folks to ride out to Ohio LinuxFest 2009 with.

Ride Share interest
Dave Ostroske is offering room for three people in his car.
I am planning to leave early Saturday morning from Wexford, PA, staying for one night, and leaving Sunday afternoon.
I'm flexible as to where we can drive around to, except during the main events on Saturday.
We can split gasoline costs and parking garage tickets (cheap!). The car has a big honkin' trunk so we'll have room to haul stuff.
I've got a CD player and a transmitter for MP3 players. Bring some tunes!
I've also got a second cig lighter, so if someone wants to use their laptop on the ride over, bring an adapter.

Room Share interest
Dave Ostroske has reserved a room with double beds, but availability may be limited.
It's at the Hyatt and we'll be checking in on Saturday night.
We can split the cost of the room. I got the OLF group rate, so it'll be relatively cheap.

Greg Simkins has reserved a room with double beds and is sharing it with Bob McFarland. I plan (at present) to arrive Friday and leave Sunday.

Wilkins School Network

2009-06-16T13:07:16Z

Gregsim: /* Volunteers */

Project Summary
WPLUG has formed a project under the supervision of the Wilkins School Technical Committee to design, deploy and maintain a computer network for Internet access at the Wilkin School Community Center.

The Wilkins School is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supporting WPLUG for our meetings and events, as well as numerous community events and classes.

The Wilkins School has approved a budget to pay for Internet service and a portion of the network installation, however we are seeking donations to cover additional costs. Information on sending a donation will be posted ASAP.

Network Architecture
The network will consist of wireless and wired Ethernet segments providing adequate capacity for users at the Center. A FOSS-based gateway device will be implemented to provide firewall, routing and other functions.

We hope to have the system up and running for the August InstallFest.

Supplies
Below is a list of hardware and electrical supplies we need for the project. We are calling on all members and WPLUG participants to provide donations where possible.

* <strike>Gateway Hardware (x86 platform) for use with FOSS firewall distro</strike> - Donation
* <strike>Linksys WRT54GL Wireless AP and Router</strike> - Donation
* Linksys WRT54GL Wireless AP and Router - One (1) needed
* Linksys WAPPOE Power over Ethernet Kit - Two (2) needed
* <strike>Wall-mount 19 in Equipment Rack</strike> - Purchased, DHK
* <strike>Ethernet switch, 24 port, 19" rack mount</strike> - Purchased, DHK
* <strike>CAT5e Patch Panel, 12 port, 19" rack mount</strike> - Donation
* <strike>Power Strip, 19" rack mount</strike> - Purchased, DHK
* 8P8C "RJ45" CAT5e Ethernet Connectors - 30 to 40 needed
* Plenum-rated CAT5e Ethernet Cable 500 ft box/spool
* Plenum-rated RG-59 Coaxial Cable 300 ft spool
* Plenum-rated RG-6 Coaxial Cable 100 ft length
* EMT Conduit 3/4 to 1 inch size
* ENT Flex Conduit 3/4 inch size
* Flex Conduit (alum or steel) 3/4 inch size
* Conduit Fittings (for above)
* Electrical boxes
* Keystone Plates & Jacks for CAT5e and CATV
* Wiremold or equivalent cable management hardware (conduit, boxes, etc)

(More to come)

Installation
We are calling on individuals to assist with the installation at the Wilkins School. We need people with experience in the following areas:

* Running electrical conduit
* Pulling cable
* General mechanical fabrication
* "Helpful hands"

Volunteers must be comfortable with working in confined areas, climbing stairs and ladders, and working for power tools. Everyone is encouraged to participate, however those under the age of eighteen will not be permitted to perform work with risk of injury.

All volunteers will be required to sign a releasing WPLUG and WSCC of liability.

The RHCT/RHCE certification has historically be the most highly touted but it's starting to decline and the LPI certifications are catching up.

PC Laboratory Facilities:
The following facilities have been offered for labs:
* Newport Business Institute Lower Burrel - Mike Griffin
* ProTech Training, Monroeville - Scott McFall
* Zion Christian Church, Carrick, Pittsburgh, South Hills - Greg Simkins

Please list ideas for labs:
* We could get a group together to install Edubuntu and Linux Terminal Server Project at Zion Christian Church. This would be ideal for these PCs which are a few years old at this point. We have an old NT server which we could reinstall as the Terminal Server and we could configure the PCs to boot over the network and load the OS, etc.

New Horizons Pittsburgh New Horizons aka Prometric Prometric

Riverhead Training offers the Linux+ and LPI exams.

Also, Red Hat's courses (and exams) are hosted by Riverhead Training (www.riverheadtraining.com) in downtown Pittsburgh. Red Hat is somewhat unique in the industry in that their adminster their exams themselves and not thru an independent channel such as VUE or Prometric.

Red Hat exams are also much more expensive than typical IT certifications. The RHCT exam is around $349 and the RHCE exam is about $749.

The RHCT/RHCE certification has historically be the most highly touted but it's starting to decline and the LPI certifications are catching up.

Red Hat exams are also much more expensive than typical IT certifications. I (Scott McFall) believe the RHCT is around $300 and the RHCE is about $750.
