I suggest looking at www.beagleboard.org

The beagle bone black is not as cheap as the rasberry pi, however it doesn't have as much controversial activity (ahem) and it is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to add IO and make PCB's for to do stuff. Numerous projects can be expediently integrated into the platform.

FreedomeBone for example (BBB server on the internet for your own domain). freedombone.uk.to

linuxcnc.org for multiaxis robot control under linux (which can be made to work under the beagle board and beagle bone).

The replicape is good for 3d printing control. www.thing-printer.com/product/replicape/

That's off the top of my head.

I have 3bbb and I plan on using them have the 7" LCD just need to have time to order the case and do the PCB

For doing pcb try kicad-pcb.org

Hope that helps!
