[wplug] Learning MySQL/MariaDB

My employer expects me to eventually assist with troubleshooting a new database system that uses MySQL/MariaDB as its backend.

I've used MySQL/MariaDB in the past, but it's mostly been trivial tasks - create a database, grant user foo all permissions, and so on. I'd like to learn more than that.

I have a book that goes over SQL syntax, but I'm not sure if it's better to start with a more general book like that or if there are better resources specific to MySQL/MariaDB.

Can anyone offer any advice? Please don't tell me to read the documentation, since reference material is /not/ instruction material, and no, Google is /not/ my friend. I'm looking for personal experiences.
