I have had a lot of success using Linux Mint Debian (LMDE) on older PC's than you are using.  I just did a sub 1GHz single process and it runs fine.  An xcfe desktop can also speed things up.  I have found that the newer desktops like gnome 3 run very slow on older PC's.

I don't need to check vmstat, I can hear it paging. I do plan on using gnome (no effects). I am using Ubuntu linux 14.04 default desktop install.
