Debian support for powerPC seems pretty solid (https://www.debian.org/ports/powerpc/), and Ubuntu seems to have inherited that support (https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/installation-guide/powerpc/ )

I'm not sure what kind of firmware issues you could expect, but I expect that'll be covered in the install documents. I didn't have any firmware issues back when I ran linux on a G3 (except I did some weird stuff in OpenFirmware occasionally)

Anything G4 or newer (and many G3 machines as well) is supported as "New World PowerMac" versions of these distros. There may be a few oddball Macs that are (G4 or newer and) not supported at all, but I suspect there'll be very few of them at Filmmakers.

I could provide some help with Debian (and a little with Ubuntu).
If enough people express interest, maybe there'll be an installfest for this.
