The most notable of these is greylisting
<http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/postgrey>. As a result of how this
works, e-mail from a new sender address and IP will be delayed for
anywhere from a few minutes to perhaps hours, if the sender waits
a long time to retry.
The most common way this is apparent is with automated e-mail in
response to some other action. For example, you create an account
on a new web site, and it sends you a confirmation e-mail message.
Instead of landing in your mailbox immediately, the message will
likely be delayed a short period because of greylisting.
Note that when a message with a particular sender address and IP
successfully gets through, future messages will be passed with no
delay, so it should only affect the *first* message from a new
sender.
Yes the delay can be annoying sometimes, but the effectiveness in
avoiding spam makes it worthwhile. Just wanted to make people
aware in advance.
