You have to watch out for Verizon's modem software.  It will 
promiscuously connect you to any open wifi in your area, which is not 
secure, to say the least.  Better to avoid it and rely on your OS wifi 
manager if you can.

But actually I don't use my modem anymore.  I tether my phone and it 
works fine.  I use it in hotels and other public places if I will be 
doing anything sensitive or entering any important passwords and I don't 
have ssh or SSL.  (And I don't do anything really sensitive even on that.)
