Again, it really depends on what your goal is.  For instance, there are 
other ways to participate in open source projects besides besides doing 
actual development.  If your goal is is to sharpen your skills in system 
administration, you could try to find a project that needs help 
maintaining infrastructure (web site, code repositories, general server 
maintenance, etc.).  It takes a lot if diverse skills to run a 
successful project, and there are many different ways to help.

As far as scripting languages (again, if you're looking to build skills 
in system administration), some knowledge of shell scripting is very 
important, and perl and possibly python would be a big help too.  If 
your goal is to do something else, determine what scripting languages, 
tools, etc., are used for whatever kind of work it is, and seek 
knowledge about those.
