I have also heard that and that some converter cables do not carry a ground lead compatible with RPi. I connected a separate lead and used separate audio cable to carry the ground. No success. The monitor reacts like there is not signal.

I have tried using a PC monitor with a DVI converter cable and the composite video into a small monitor. Neither method works. Has anyone had any success connecting the video output to anything other than a television?

I don't actually have one, so can't say first hand - but the documentation indicates that using an HDMI-to-DVI cable is supposed to work.
