Many of you on here use Gmail. Just from a usability standpoint, I can hardly blame you; rolling your own mail server isn't easy, and even if you do, open source webmail clients like Roundcube and Squirrelout are...not the best.
Mailpile, a project on Indiegogo, wants to change that. Initially, its developers want to make Mailpile into a webmail client that's as easy to use as services like Gmail and Hotmail but comes with additional functionality that non-free providers would never include because it would infringe on their business models. User-friendly email encryption is a top priority, and XMPP instant messaging support is a possibility. Eventually, they want to develop Mailpile into a complete mail server.
The primary developer has already been working on Mailpile for two years, so he's already got a decent codebase to start with. He's not asking for a whole lot, comparatively speaking, and the contribution tiers are really quite modest. Check it out:
