[wplug] VPS recommendation

It looks like MetaARPA is a good deal if you don't need too much storage
space, but if you're going to be running something where people can post
pictures and other media files, I think it's best to play it safe. Still, SDF
looks like a nice organization. I'm going to look into it more for my own use
once I've got some free time.
You don't have to leave all your friends behind to move to an open
platform, George. Friendica, for instance, has a “Facebook Connect” plugin
that keeps you linked up with all of your friends who won't switch over. You
can read their Facebook activity and make posts to Facebook just as you
ordinarily would, but you also get all of the nifty features that Friendica
provides!
There are plugins that support IRC chat, OpenStreetMap, other non-free
social networks, Gravatar, and more. In fact, since Friendica seems to
offer so much more than other platforms, I'm looking very closely at it. Its
developer seems to have a good head on his shoulders, even if he can't
write good documentation. Maybe that's where I come in.
>From what I can see, Diaspora is generally regarded as a flop, even by the
people in charge. They took down their official blog and don't seem to
have any status updates on the main page.
