To respond to the comment about older hardware components being
difficult/expensive to find, I've had decent luck locating such
things on <http://www.geeks.com/>.  Note that the items they carry
vary quite a bit from week to week and many are refurbs/used.

Unfortunately, they don't seem to have a replacement for the
(original Thunderbird) Athlon processor I just cooked...  :(
