Interestingly enough, Zork is an early successful example of a
virtual machine.  To be cross-platform, it was written in a custom
language that was then run by a VM (the Z-machine) written for
target platforms like DOS, DEC machines, TRS-80, Apple ][, and
Mac.

There is a modern successor to this language called Inform that you
might have fun with.
